Dear Colleagues,
I want to provide a brief update on the Pathology Chair Search Committee's progress.
We initially reviewed 29 applications and many qualified candidates were then personally screened. After this initial screening process, eight individuals were invited to interview with the Search Committee. Having just concluded these interviews, the Committee has issued invitations to five candidates to return for comprehensive two-day visits. We plan to schedule these visits in January and February.
I am very grateful to the members of the Search Committee for their dedication to the process. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.
Best Regards,
Suzanne White, MD

Dear Colleagues,
Approximately two months ago the Pathology Chair Search Committee received its charge to identify well-qualified candidates for the next Chairperson of the Department of Pathology. I am writing to you as the Committee Chair to update you on our progress and to apprise you of our next steps and anticipated timeline.
The Search Committee is comprised of elected faculty members of the Department, individuals selected by the Dean and leaders representing our major hospital partners, the Detroit Medical Center, Karmanos Cancer Center and the VA Medical Center.
We began the search process by seeking input from the pathology faculty, graduate students, residents and the Search Committee members on the desired professional and personal characteristics for the next Chair of the Department of Pathology. The product was a consensus document outlining the specifications for the position (see attached).
As you are aware, the search firm of Witt/Keiffer has been engaged to assist the Committee in the search process. Witt/Kieffer and the Committee will cast a wide net, reaching out nationally to individuals eminently qualified for the position at national meetings and through connections with colleagues at outside institutions. The AAMC Chairs and Deans will be contacted to solicit potential candidates. In addition, the advertisement of this position will be published in the New England Journal of Medicine (July 12) and the American Journal of Pathology (August).
Finally, as important members of WSU's family, we turn to you for nominations of well-qualified internal and external individuals for this position. If you know of such candidates, please forward the individual's name, institution and contact information to my attention (swhite1@med.wayne.edu).
As part of its charge, the Search Committee was asked to bring candidates through as early as September. Upon completion of the candidate interviews, the Committee will deliver a "short list" of 3 candidates to Dean Mentzer for his consideration. This will conclude the charge of the Search Committee and the Dean will make the final selection.
Because the Committee's foremost charge is to deliver a slate of outstanding candidates with impeccable professional credentials and personal integrity, it is impossible to predict our timeline for completion. However, it is my hope that the Search Committee will conclude our processes by the beginning of the new year.
I will write to you again when there is progress to report.
Sincerely,
Suzanne White, MD

The Pathology Chair Search Committee received the Dean's charge to identify three candidates capable of leading the department and building upon its wide range of sub-specialty expertise and strong research programs. Over the past 10 months, we have worked diligently with Witt/Kieffer to assess the field. In all, 29 qualified individuals underwent screening interviews. Eight outstanding candidates were then invited for on-site interviews. More comprehensive, two-day visits with four individuals were completed earlier this month.
Today, I am pleased to report that the Pathology Chair Search Committee
completed its evaluation process and submitted the names of three (3)
candidates to Dean Mentzer for final consideration.
It has been an honor to serve the School of Medicine as Chair of the
Search Committee. I owe a debt of gratitude to the members, who worked
tirelessly to deliver a recommendation to the Dean. Our role as a
committee is now complete and it is anticipated that the final selection
process will be completed within the next few months. Dean Mentzer will
be in contact with the department when news becomes available.
Sincerely,
Suzanne R. White, M.D.
